Just a tiny portion undermines the main idea. You begin asking “what’s the total interest paid over the life of the loan?” instead of “how much can I borrow?” These are distinct questions that typically result in quite different conclusions.

    It’s difficult to ignore the fact that, in contrast to credit card or investment literacy, mortgage literacy has actually improved over the past ten years, in part due to readily available calculators and in part because people have become cynical enough to do their own math.
