When the neighbors began chatting, the gate was still smoking. At nearly four in the morning, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at Sam Altman’s San Francisco home. It bounced off the front of the house and landed on the driveway, charring the entrance but somehow not hurting anyone. The majority of the story had been captured by the security cameras by dawn: a young man, hood up, calmly approaching one of the most influential houses in technology while holding a fire.

What followed is more difficult to comprehend. The same man, Daniel Moreno-Gama, 20, was apprehended outside OpenAI’s headquarters less than two hours later while in possession of kerosene, a lighter, and a document that didn’t appear to be the work of an impetuous vandal. Investigators claim that additional AI executives, board members, and investors were mentioned in the manifesto. The first section was titled “Your Last Warning.” It’s the kind of detail that sticks in your memory and transforms the way a whole industry views its own front door.

Silicon Valley has been discussing AI safety for years as an abstract issue involving alignment, policy, and theoretical risk. That conversation became more immediate and physical after Altman’s house was attacked. Walking through Pacific Heights in San Francisco this week, it seems as though the discussion has subtly moved from intellectual debate to threat assessments and private security contracts.

To do this, Moreno-Gama traveled from a peaceful suburb outside of Houston, which is unsettling in and of itself. His public defender, who has maintained that the case is overcharged and stems from a mental health issue rather than ideology, claims he has no criminal history. In a statement, his parents said that their son had recently experienced a breakdown. It’s possible that both are true. He might have been ill, and one of his purported posts made fun of “Luigi-ing some tech CEOs,” alluding to Luigi Mangione’s ongoing trial in the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO. He might also have been a part of a larger, more irate attitude toward AI that has been developing online for months.

Language of that type doesn’t just appear. It consumes something. Automation-related layoffs, artist copyright lawsuits, job concerns, and a widespread perception among Americans that this technology is being developed on top of them rather than for them. The weekend following the assault, Altman posted a picture of his family, including his young daughter, on his blog and urged de-escalation. It sounded more like a man who had spent the night reevaluating the kind of life he could provide for his child than a statement from a CEO.

Allegedly, two days later, two individuals fired shots from a car outside Altman’s residence. The district attorney is still considering whether to file charges, so they were released without being charged. Despite the lack of a specific federal statute and the lack of an equivalent state law in California, federal prosecutors have indicated that they may treat the Molotov case as domestic terrorism. This is an inconvenient legal gap.

There are significant security ramifications, not just for Altman. In the days since, executives at rival AI labs are said to have strengthened their personal security. Budgets for home security are being quietly questioned by boards. The sector that pledged to create the future is now employing people to watch over its homes at night.

The speed at which the mood has shifted is difficult to ignore. The gate reflected the fire. Maybe not the next time.
