Jay Kovacs, president of Axient Systems, accepted the award on behalf of the company. Netherlands Ambassador Birgitta Tazelaar presented it, calling Axient a “key player at the intersection of academia, government, and industry” within the Dutch innovation ecosystem. The award is co-organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the U.S. Congressional Caucus of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the Netherland-America Foundation.

What the Freddy Heineken Award Winner Does in the Netherlands

Axient Systems is a systems integrator with three core areas: space systems engineering, critical asset security, and modeling, simulation, and analysis. Its Delft office at Poortweg 4A sits in the region known as the Aerospace Delta, putting it alongside Dutch research institutions and aerospace firms.

The company’s most prominent Dutch contract is the PAMI-1 mission. Axient serves as mission integrator for a sovereign space imaging satellite that will provide the Netherlands with independent earth-observation capability and space-based laser communications for fast, secure data transfer. PAMI-1 is scheduled for launch in 2027 and will support intelligence gathering for the Netherlands’ Armed Forces.

The satellite serves the Defence Space Security Centre under the Royal Netherlands Air Force, which oversees the program. Sovereign space capability has become a policy priority for several European nations looking to reduce dependence on allied satellites for military intelligence.

Beyond the satellite program, Axient’s critical asset security work covers drone detection, integrated air and missile defense, and maritime and seabed security, all built around integrating sensor data for command and control. Its modeling and simulation tools create digital representations of complex defense scenarios, cutting development risk before hardware is ever fielded.

European Expansion and the Astrion Connection

Astrion completed its acquisition of Axient on September 5, 2024, folding the firm into a portfolio designed to strengthen cybersecurity, mission support, systems engineering, and digital solutions. Astrion itself is backed by Brightstar Capital Partners and is headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama, a hub for U.S. defense and space programs.

The Delft office opened the same year, building on existing partnerships with Dutch firms TNO and FSO Instruments. Since then the company has moved quickly to embed itself in European defense networks. In one sign of that momentum, launch-services firm SEOPS signed a partnership agreement with Axient Systems BV to expand European launch services, extending the company’s reach from systems integration into mission-delivery infrastructure.

The Holland on the Hill award, named for Freddy Heineken who built his family’s beer brand into a global name using American marketing techniques in the 1940s, has been given annually since 2014 to a Dutch or American company that has made a substantial contribution to the bilateral economic relationship. Past Freddy Heineken Award winners include Amazon (2014), Netflix (2018), and Fugro (2025). Proceeds from the Ambassadors’ Awards Dinner fund the Netherland-America Foundation’s Washington internship program.

The Netherlands is the fourth-largest foreign investor in the United States, and bilateral trade and investment between the two countries support more than 1 million U.S. jobs, according to the organizations behind the award.

For Axient, the recognition matters less as a trophy and more as a signal of where the company is placing its bets. PAMI-1’s 2027 launch date will be the clearest near-term test of whether that integration investment actually delivers.
